Due to personal circumstances I'm relocating to London, it's a big move for me because in comparison to London, Norwich is a small wooden hut in the middle of a muddly, plowed field. While I've applied for a transfer at work, I've also decided to have another go at breaking into the videogame industry....
So, I started with searching the listings on GamesIndustry.biz. I figured it would be a decent start, and within a few minutes had 4 or 5 possible opportunities local to my new area. So, why did I hesitate? I guess the last experience has me completely spooked, getting no replies was pretty heartbreaking (but in this climate not unexpected) and had me questioning my own motives. I guess lots of people have a desire to work in the industry just because they enjoy games, am I really any different?
But then, I really love the videogame industry itself. It's an animal, constantly in a state of evolution and flux. Publishers, developers and console makers are up one minutes and down the next. Gamers themselves are a fickle bunch, we jam forums and gaming blogs with complaints about games like Black Ops which ends up selling 13.7 million units anyway in the US alone! When I was working as a board admin and a moderator for OGame I really enjoyed every part of my position, not just the good days like developing new projects or creating new artwork, but also the bad days like trying to control a rampant mob of forum users rising up and spamming the forum with phallic images in response to a particular decision they didn't like.
Because in the end, shouldn't we all really appreciate the opportunity to contribute in a positive way to something we are all a part of? As consumers we support the developers, as volunteers we support the players, and when working as developers and programmers aren't people just trying to create really great content that people like themselves can enjoy? We should all be so lucky.
So, here I go again, hope I have better luck this time.
